J.D. asked me to answer 10 questions about my soon to be published novel, Peace by Piece.

1. What is the working title of your book? The title is Peace by Piece.

2. Where did the idea for the book come from?  Eating disorders and the joys and heartaches of step-parenting touch the lives of so many women—including me and others close to me. I felt readers would relate to a contemporary character dealing with the same everyday challenges we face.

3. What is the genre of the book? Women’s fiction. Sub-genres include, love, family, relationships.

4. Which actors would you choose to play the characters in a movie rendition? Okay, I admit, when I started writing Peace by Piece, I casted it for the big screen. Since that was 15 years ago, my cast has aged out. I’ll leave the next round of casting to the experts.

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Peace by Piece deals with unshakable first love, family, relationships, the joys and difficulties of being a stepparent—all shadowed by the curse of anorexia/bulimia.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency/publisher? Peace by Piece will be self-published

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript? The first draft took somewhere between two to three years, fitting in writing around my full-time day job. Now, 10+ years later, I’ve lost count of the number of drafts it took to finally write “The End” and mean it.

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Rather than compare to specific books, I’d say Peace by Piece will appeal to readers who treasure stories by authors who write realistically about women and relationships—authors such as Elizabeth Berg, Sue Miller, Adriana Trigiani, Anna Quindlan, Michelle Richmond, Jacquelyn Mitchard—my list could go on and on—there are so many authors whose work I admire.

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book? I don’t remember a time I didn’t love books. Somewhere in my twenties, I realized I wanted to write one. It took another 20-something years to finally join a writing group and take the creative leap.

10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? The push and pull of Maggie’s relationships will resonate with any woman who has longed for a baby, made the wrong choice in love, or stayed in her marriage or relationship for the wrong reasons.
